ABA therapy in Colorado for ADHD with Health First Colorado (Colorado Medicaid)

Your child does not need an autism diagnosis to get behavioral therapy through Health First Colorado; the state's own page says it is available to all eligible children when medically necessary.

That one sentence from the state changes the search. A child with ADHD, a behavior concern, or no diagnosis yet can be assessed. The provider decides whether behavioral therapy is medically necessary and files the request.

Not every ABA provider takes children without an autism diagnosis, so this page keeps the ones whose websites mention ADHD. Each card quotes the line.

What the state says, word for word

"Does my child have to have a diagnosis of Autism to qualify for the services? No. Behavioral therapy is available to all children currently eligible for Health First Colorado when the service is medically necessary." That is from the Pediatric Behavioral Therapies page, read 18 October 2026. The page adds that the state has criteria for what qualifies.

Commercial insurance is different. Colorado's autism coverage law for state-regulated plans is written around autism spectrum disorders, and TRICARE's ABA program requires an autism diagnosis. If your child has Medicaid as a second plan, say so on the first call.

What ABA for ADHD works on

The goals look different from an autism plan. A BCBA writing a plan for a child with ADHD usually targets the routines that fall apart: getting out the door, homework, waiting, following a two-step direction without a fight. The registered behavior technician works on them where they happen, often at the kitchen table after school, with a visual timer and a checklist, and the parent training is about catching the good minute and naming it.

Ask the provider whether it has written plans for children without an autism diagnosis before, how it shows medical necessity for ADHD in the prior authorization request, and how it works with the school's own plan if there is one.

How to start ABA therapy in Colorado with Health First Colorado

Call a provider from the cards above. It assesses your child, writes the treatment plan and files the prior authorization request with Colorado Medicaid; an approved request covers up to six months of therapy sessions. You don't file anything, and no autism diagnosis is required when the therapy is medically necessary. The three steps, with who to call.

Questions parents ask

Will Medicaid approve ABA for ADHD alone?

The state does not promise approval for any diagnosis. It covers behavioral therapy when a provider shows it is medically necessary, and the review vendor decides. A provider that works with ADHD will know what the request needs to say.

What if the request is denied?

The provider can ask for a reconsideration with new information, or file a new request. You can also appeal in writing to the Office of Administrative Courts within 30 calendar days of the notice. Both routes are on the state's page.

How this list is made. Every provider here is on Colorado's own list of Health First Colorado behavioral therapy providers. We read that list and each provider's website on the date printed on the page and quote what they say. The featured provider is placed by arrangement and is held to the same facts as every other row. How we list providers.
