How ABA with Health First Colorado starts in Fort Collins: the three steps

The state's own benefit page describes this order. No autism diagnosis is required when the therapy is medically necessary, and children on a waiver can use it too.

  1. 1

    You call a provider

First, with the child's Health First Colorado ID handy

Pick two or three providers in Fort Collins from the list and ask each one the same questions: do you have an opening for a child this age, how soon could an assessment happen, and do you come to the home. A provider that is on the state list is enrolled; that is all the list tells you.

  2. 2

The provider files the prior authorization

    Second, after the assessment

The provider assesses your child, writes the treatment plan and submits a prior authorization request (PAR) to the state's review vendor. You do not file it. If the vendor asks for documents and does not get them within four business days, the request is denied for lack of information, so keep the provider's calls answered.

  3. 3

    Sessions start

Third, once the PAR is approved, for up to six months at a time

An approved PAR is good for up to six months. After that the provider files a new one. If a PAR is denied, the doctor who requested it gets a peer-to-peer call first, and you can appeal in writing within 30 calendar days of the notice.

What in-home ABA therapy and center ABA in Fort Collins look like with Colorado Medicaid

Most ABA therapy in Fort Collins with Medicaid happens at home. 34 of the 35 providers on the state list for Fort Collins are home based or do both, and 17 run a center families drive to.

An in-home session is usually a registered behavior technician (RBT) at your kitchen table or on the floor, working through a treatment plan that a board certified behavior analyst (BCBA) wrote after the assessment. Therapy sessions run in blocks of a few hours, several days a week, and the BCBA checks in on a schedule the plan sets. Daily living skills, communication and behavior at home are the usual goals for a young child; for a school-age child the plan often adds the classroom and the community.

A center-based ABA therapy day looks more like preschool: peers, a structured room, a team of technicians under one or two BCBAs. Some Fort Collins providers start a child at home and move to a center later, or the other way round. Ask which one the provider recommends for your child's age and why, and whether the same technician comes each week.

For a child under 3, early intervention runs alongside ABA. Foothills Gateway covers Larimer County; the state referral line is 833-733-3734.

Colorado Medicaid covers ABA therapy for children with autism in Fort Collins: the rules in short, and how to start

Health First Colorado, run by the Department of Health Care Policy and Financing, pays for pediatric behavioral therapies when they are medically necessary. The provider you choose assesses your child, writes the treatment plan and sends a prior authorization request to the state's utilization management vendor. An approved request covers up to six months of ABA therapy sessions; then the provider files again.

No autism diagnosis is required by the state. A child with a diagnosis of autism, ADHD, a developmental delay or a behavior concern can be assessed, and the reviewer decides on medical necessity. Children on a Medicaid waiver can use the benefit, and families over the income line whose child has a disability can ask about the Children's Buy-In Program.

Private insurance first, Medicaid second is common in Fort Collins. Give the provider both cards on the first call. The family usually pays nothing for covered ABA therapy sessions; the state's fee schedule pays the provider $17.20 per 15 minutes for the main ABA code as of July 2026.
